FIELDWORK

Rainforest Tree Sampling
Compared forest structure and diversity among forest patches in different topographic locations. Compared growth stages (seedlings, saplings, trees), tree sizes, growth forms (lianas vs standing plants), plant types (monocots vs dicots), and diversity.
Tropical Forest Stream Ecology & Sampling
Determined how benthic biodiversity (macrozoobenthos) within the river site are affected by ecology. Determined the state/ quality of the river site by analysing its water chemistry, physical characteristics, and biodiversity. Tropical rivers are poorly understood and studied, and biodiversity and endemism is particularly high in South East Asia.

Coral Reef Sampling
Sampled fish and invertebrate diversity, coral growth forms, and impacts of two coral reef sites. Compared and analysed the current impacts to past data sets and how the impacts can be improved.
Mangrove Surveys
A quantitative mangrove survey and reported on carbon storage (correlation of height vs diameter) of different mangrove species and how they affected each other. Mangroves are a carbon sink, a flood management system, a water filtration system, and a primary producer.

Bat Surveys
Counted species numbers and tested environmental factors that influence Endangered flying foxes nesting sites in Juara, Tioman Island, Malaysia. Flying foxes help maintain the health of Old World tropical forests, particularly on islands. Also, sampled how many species of bats passed a certain area in Krau Wildlife Reserve, Malaysia, using a combination of visual, capture, and acoustic recording methods.
Camera Traps Surveys
Used camera traps to study the species richness and composition, relative abundance, and activity patterns of land mammal communities in Krau Wildlife Reserve, Malaysia.
